Shoe Drive
IB Shoe Drive

On Saturday, March 6, a team of Red Bank Regional's International Baccalaureate students transported six carloads of shoes to Red Bank Middle School to support a town-wide shoe drive benefiting victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The IB students launched the project in conjunction with the charity organization Soles4Souls, which, since 2005, has been collecting used and new shoes for people in need around the world. Because the activity blended community service and an international perspective, the IB students immediately embraced this project.

The students made and distributed flyers, visited several study halls informing their peers of their goal, and deposited decorated collection boxes in English and other classrooms. The response from the RBR community was overwhelming, filling classrooms, closets and offices with generous donations from both staff and students. The IB students' effort received significant assistance from Culinary Arts teacher Peter Roskowinski, who offered delicious incentives--soup and chicken parmesan, for example--to shoe donors. On the day of the town-wide drop-off, RBR's volunteers loaded student-driven cars with donations and took them to the middle school, where they sorted and banded hundreds of pairs of shoes, then loaded them into a truck trailer for delivery.

All shoes collected will be transported to Soles4Souls headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee, where they will then be shipped to Haiti. Councilman Michael DuPont, who gained support from all of the Red Bank schools and several local businesses, initiated the town-wide effort.

NHS Haiti drive -- a success!

Volunteers spent weeks of lunch and study hall periods soliciting spare change from students and staff. To add to school donations, Mucha and fellow NHS members Roxy Harrison, Jen O’Brien, Meghan O’Brien, Eugene Vaios, Mackenzie Tyler and Sharon Tartarone spent two weekend days “canning” at local businesses. Other members such as Katelyn Lynch, Oscar Salinas, Esteban Urena and Lucy Cabrera collected funds from friends, family and workplaces. Money raised from the fund drive will be split between YeleHaiti and Doctors Without Borders.
